On February 12, 2009, over 105 cities around the world will host Twestivals, bringing together Twitter communities for an evening of fun to raise money and awareness for charity: water. Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States and home to a diverse population and vibrant digital community, will be one of the premiere cities for Twestival 2009.
Started in London in 2008, Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but working from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact. By rallying together globally, under short timescales, for a single goal on the same day, the Twestival hopes to raise awareness for a good cause and be a force for positive action.
Right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. That’s one in six of us. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many communities in developing nations often have a supply of clean drinking water below the ground, but no way to get to it.
This is where Charity: Water comes in. Drilling a well can cost from $4,000 - $12,000USD – a price that keeps water out of reach for places where people must live on less than $1 a day. Charity:Water brings safe, clean drinking water to people in developing nations by funding sustainable clean water solutions – such as wells – in the areas of greatest need.
HOUSTON’s GOAL: RAISE $4000 to BUILD A WELL!
You are welcome to join in the fun (yes, it will be!) and help out by becoming a Sponsor, Volunteer, or donating for any of our Needs.
